CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police will have South Boulevard closed for much of the day south Charlotte after they said a car crashed into utility poles, knocking out power to hundreds of people in the area.
Officers said the crash happened just after 6:15 a.m. on South Boulevard at Briabend Drive, south of Scaleybark Road.
Police said the driver of the car hit two utility poles on the southbound side of the road, knocking out power to more than 1,200 Duke Energy customers.
Most of those customers had their power restored before 9 a.m.

Officers said the driver was the only person in the car and may have suffered a medical condition. He was taken to the hospital but it was not clear how badly he was injured.
South Boulevard was closed in both directions between Scaleybark Road and Woodlawn Road. Officials told Channel 9 that because of the severity of the damage it would take until at least 4 p.m. to repair the poles and power lines and that the road could not reopen until their work was done.
