INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — An Indian Trail bird sanctuary is offering eggs for snakes this spring in the area.
Carolina Waterfowl Rescue posted on its Facebook page that it is encouraging people to capture black snakes instead of killing them. In return, they will give them chicken eggs in return.
Black snakes like to climb trees and houses to get to the eggs from birds’ nests to eat them.
Someone took them up on their offer Wednesday and brought in a snake for some eggs.
It was the first exchange since the group posted the offer on its Facebook page a month ago.

"If they were going to kill the snake because they find it eating the eggs, we would exchange the snake’s life for the eggs," Carolina Waterfowl Rescue Jennifer Gordon said.
As temperatures get warmer, the snakes come out of hiding in order to find food.
"We're just trying to bring awareness about snakes in the area and the majority of them are harmless and they get killed for no reason and we want people to understand that the snake’s life is worth more than an egg," Gordon said.
