BOULDER, COLORADO — A North Carolina emergency medical technician visiting Boulder, Colorado, rushed to help save a 30-year-old climber who fell 50 feet down a mountain.
The climber got hurt in a remote are with no cellphone service, but luckily for him, a medic from North Carolina was there right when he fell.
Bailey Parton of Asheville and her friend just wanted to enjoy a day hiking. Parton spent six months on a rescue squad in the Appalachian Mountains.
They were a little lost looking for an area called Red Rocks Amphitheater when she heard a call for help.
She crossed the river to get to him with help from other climbers.
“I was really just preparing in my head what I need to look for, what I need to ask him,” Parton said. “There is a lot of reviewing the steps of the process. It is very methodical. There are a lot of steps to the process that you need to not miss in a situation like this."
The climber who fell only injured his shoulder and technical rock rescue crews helped get him back across the creek.
“They're a specialty unit that does this kind of rescue,” Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Jeff Caton said. “They have all the ropes and all of the equipment to go across the river and bring them back across safely."
Parton was glad she was there at the right time or the climber’s injuries could have been a lot worse.
“It happened for a reason,” Parton said. “We got lost for a reason. I`m glad we were here.”
