911 tapes released in deadly east Charlotte officer-involved shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police released new 911 calls and radio traffic of the moments before and after a deadly officer-involved shooting in east Charlotte in January.

The audio includes reactions from the undercover officer and witnesses minutes after shots were fired.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department just released audio in the case in which police said Josue Diaz, 28, sideswiped the unmarked vehicle.

"I'm on Central (Avenue) and Albemarle (Road,)” said the undercover officer. “Do you have any units that can assist me? I'm following him."

The officer followed the car for two minutes and 40 seconds.

Diaz then got out of his vehicle with a gun and shot at the officer. The undercover officer returned fire and shot Diaz.

“Shots fired, shots fired, shots fired,” the undercover officer told dispatch. “I need 1033 traffic. One down.”

People in the area near the 6200 block of Albemarle Road immediately called 911.

"A man is out with a gun,” the caller said. “I believe he shot one other man."

“I need police bad,” a witness said in the 911 call. “I've got a guy in a brown SUV on Albemarle Road shooting five or six times at another guy in a truck in front of him.”

The undercover officer made urgent calls for help.

"I got one down,” he said. “I need medic. It doesn't look good."

Diaz died after being shot.

The case is under investigation and police have not released the officer’s name.

Police said they found a bullet hole in the officer's vehicle that matched the gun Diaz used.
