18-year-old sought in Kannapolis shooting, police say

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Police are searching for an 18-year-old in connection with a shooting early Tuesday at some apartments in Kannapolis.

Officers said Antonio Dewayne Davis opened fire at the Westgreen Apartments. Authorities said the shooting stemmed from an incident Monday.

He is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury with intent to kill and first-degree burglary.

Neighbors heard what they thought were fireworks.

“I heard about eight or nine shots, but you know, I thought it was firecrackers,” James Carr said.

Police said Davis, who hasn't been arrested, broke into an apartment and shot someone.

“Kids play here all the time. It's sad that somebody got shot,” Hollie Hampton said.

The victim is at the hospital in stable condition.

“If they find him, I hope it's very soon,” Hampton said. “The kids don't need to be scared to come out and play."

Police warned residents that if they see Davis, they should not try to apprehend him and instead call the Kannapolis Police Department at 704-920-4000. People can also call Cabarrus Area Crime Stoppers at 704-932-7463.

There is a reward through Crime Stoppers for information that leads police to his arrest.
