Police said a man was speeding down Carolina Place Parkway near the mall around 6:30 a.m. when he hit the moped rider and left the victim and car behind.
By the time police arrived, the victim had died. His name has not been released.
"That's really sad that somebody passed away. That's really sad that a life was taken,” Nicole White, of Pineville, said.
Nearly four hours after the crash happened, as police cleaned up the crushed car and moped, another man walked up and told officers something.
Those officers then took off in their cars.
Channel 9 followed around the corner where they ran through a construction zone and wooded area, and about 20 minutes later, came out of the woods with the suspect in handcuffs.
“That's really cold-hearted, for you not to stop and see what's going on,” White said.
The crash left those who drove by the scene shocked and saddened and hoping that this brings some attention to the bustling area.
“They fly through here constantly,” White said.
“People don’t really care. They think about themselves,” Bianca White said. “It's all, I’m trying to think where I’m going."
Nicole White walks along the busy roadway with her children frequently.
“It is a concern because some people run the lights over here,” she said. “They just do not pay attention, they do not pay attention at all. I get nervous. It’s really scary, it makes me fear for walking.”
The police chief said they are still working to find the victim's family, so until then, they won't release his name.
