CHARLOTTE — Reiner Akeemmohammed Davis, 20, died Friday after his vehicle crashed following a police pursuit on Statesville Road in north Charlotte, troopers said.
A witness saw the speeding SUV race by when it flipped several times.
“It was like a big dust cloud, I heard a lot of booms,” Nathan Brown said. “Then I saw the police officer, he came up really shortly after with his lights on so I knew he had been following behind him or chasing him.”
Troopers were trying to stop Davis on Interstate 77 in the afternoon.
The SUV didn't stop and, instead, fled and got off I-77 at Statesville Road with troopers following. The SUV lost control near Lakeview Road, and Davis was ejected, officials said.
The SUV was reported stolen out of Huntersville.
No other injuries were reported.
Davis had been arrested and charged in the past with child abuse and communicating threats.
