CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police arrested and charged Marquise Detrea Teeter with murder in the shooting death of a woman on North Tryon Street, just outside uptown, in the middle of the afternoon Wednesday.
Authorities identified the victim as 27-year-old Brittany Carelock.
Officers were called to the scene on North Tryon Street, just north of 12th Street near Tryon-Church Connector Street, around 3:30 p.m.
Investigators said officers found Carelock lying on the ground with a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police quickly shut down a portion of North Tryon Street and set up a large perimeter while detectives gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses.
Approximately an hour after the shooting call, investigators said they believed Carelock knew her killer and the shooting was not a random act of violence.
When detectives cleared the scene and reopened North Tryon Street around 7:30 p.m., they had not released a motive or made any arrests.
“I did see a lot of cops, photos being taken of a particular vehicle and questions being asked to people in the area,” said Chrishad Butler, who owns a business nearby.

Butler operates his barbershop out of a nearby building that’s home to several businesses. He said he wasn’t at his shop when the shooting happened but arrived a couple of hours after the fact.
“It’s a reaction of disbelief because yes, this area does have its issues, but as far as crime it isn’t that bad,” said Butler.
He and others hope that police are able to solve the case soon and that the homicide doesn’t further stigmatize the area.
“There are a lot of people here who offer great services, but you don’t get a chance to see it because outside it doesn’t seem as appealing than when you walk in the doors,” Butler said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police or report the information anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
