Ex-wife shoots man to death at southwest Charlotte hotel, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — A man had died following a shooting at a hotel in southwest Charlotte Friday morning, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. at Embassy Suites on South Tryon Street where police said they found 45-year-old Jamal Dade in the parking lot of the hotel with a gunshot wound.

Jamal Dade was taken to an area hospital, where he later died.

Police said 41-year-old Shemeka Nicole Dade was a suspect in this case. According to an affidavit obtained by Channel 9, Dade admitted to shooting her ex-husband, Jamal Dade.

She has been arrested and charged with murder. She is in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Channel 9 found court documents indicating that their marriage was dissolved ten days ago, on April 9.

The affidavit describes an interview detectives held with a hotel guest who said he was in his car in the parking lot when he heard Jamal and Shemeka arguing.

He saw Jamal spit at Shemeka from the passenger side of a car. When she pointed a gun at him, Jamal told her to shoot him, the witness says. Shemeka shot Jamal once and stayed at the scene, according to the witness.

Jamal’s cousin told detectives she was visiting him and was with him when he died. She says he worked at the hotel and recounted a similar timeline, per the affidavit.

The two were standing near an outside seating area and Shemeka was in the driver’s seat of a car. Shemeka pulled out the gun and put it on the armrest, telling Jamal “I’ll use it on you,” his cousin recounted in the affidavit.

“Use it,” Jamal responded, according to his cousin. Jamal walked to Shemeka, who pointed the gun at his chest and then shot him in the head.

The affidavit states video footage from the hotel shows Shemeka walking around the front of the car towards Jamal before shooting him.

Another guest at the hotel told Channel 9 that he didn’t hear any commotion.

“I’m from South Florida; there are shootings all the time. I mean, it’s sad that somebody lost their life, that’s for sure. But it won’t stop me from coming back to Charlotte,” the guest explained.
